Kids Alive DR /Vida Para Niños
Last updated: January 5, 2026

We are excited about this new season of transition for the ministries in the Dominican Republic. We also recognize that with change comes questions and new processes, and we are committed to walking through them with clarity and care.

This page answers common questions about the transition from Kids Alive International to a new U.S.-based organization supporting the ministry in the Dominican Republic.

Why the Transition is happening

  • After several years of prayerful discussion and collaboration, Kids Alive International (KAI) and the Dominican Republic ministry, Asociación Vida Para Niños (AVPN) mutually agreed that the ministry is well-positioned to move forward under a new structure, and the separation would allow both organizations to focus on its selected strategic direction.

In recent years, KAI has increasingly focused on God's call to transform the lives of abused children, their families, and their communities through Gospel-centered trauma recovery, family strengthening, community transformation, and legal advocacy or justice initiatives. Meanwhile, the DR ministries have remained deeply committed to God’s call for them and His founding mission of transforming lives through holistic Christian education, residential care, healthcare, discipleship programs, and post-secondary scholarships.

Recognizing that serving two distinct missions under one organization presents significant challenges, the DR leadership has chosen to form their own independent U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organization, and Kids Alive International has agreed to support this transition.

We believe both organizations can serve vulnerable children more effectively by focusing resources and messaging around our respective core strengths.

The transition allows the new organization to be led by individuals with a long-term commitment to the DR ministry—to provide focused oversight, operational support, and development services tailored specifically to its work.

We are deeply grateful for Kids Alive International’s three decades of partnership and the strong foundation it helped establish.

  • This transition is not the result of conflict, failure, or concerns. It is a strategic and collaborative decision rooted in maturity, sustainability, and long-term vision.

Kids Alive International has played an important role in strengthening child protection practices, trauma-responsive care, and organizational systems. Those standards remain firmly in place.

  • This transition positions the ministries in the Dominican Republic for long-term sustainability, clarity of mission, and growth—while preserving the heart, people, and programs that have made it impactful for more than three decades. We move forward with gratitude for the past and confidence in what God has ahead.

  • All current ministries affiliated with Kids Alive International will transfer to the new organization and Kids Alive International will no longer have any affiliated ministries in the Dominican Republic following the transition period.

  • At this time, the Dominican Republic is our sole focus. It’s going to take a lot of work to do this right. We want to grow forward, with you, in excellence.

What’s changing / what’s staying the same

  • What is changing is the U.S.-based organizational oversight and operational support. The new organization will now provide leadership in areas such as governance, communications, development, donor care, and accountability.

  • The most important things are not changing:

    • The long-term missionaries (Trautweins, Van Der Molens, O'Briens, Dougans, Kami West Ciprian and Jan Burkey) and short-term missionaries

    • The Dominican Republic National leadership and staff

    • The children and families served

    • The schools, residential facilities, sports ministries, and scholarship programs

    • The commitment to Christ-centered, holistic care

The ministry on the ground in the Dominican Republic continues as it always has.

  • The new organization is a Christ-centered U.S. nonprofit organization qualified under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3) formed to support and strengthen the long-term holistic care ministries in the Dominican Republic. It is led by individuals who have deep, long-standing relationships with the Dominican Republic ministry and its missionaries, and by donors who have faithfully supported this work for many years.

You can expect your donation to seamlessly continue to support the mission and vision your gift was intended for.

Its mission is to ensure excellence, accountability, and sustainability so children can thrive spiritually, emotionally, physically, and academically.

  • The new organization believes that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ can transform a child’s life, giving them a purpose, a healthy community, and the strength to pursue their God given talent no matter the adversities they face.

  • The new organization is a Christ-centered, nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower children from under-resourced communities in the Dominican Republic to experience transformed and abundant lives through physical, spiritual, emotional growth and education.

  • The new organization’s Vision is that every child will:

    1. Enjoy a vibrant, life-changing relationship with God

    2. Experience physical and emotional well-being

    3. Be equipped for a life of independence and service

    4. Live in family and community free of fear and violence

  • The new organization’s organizational Values are:

    • Excellence in Stewardship. We honor the trust placed in us by managing resources—financial, human, physical, relational, and spiritual—with integrity, transparency, and accountability. We pursue operational excellence as faithful stewards of the talents and gifts God provides.

    • Collaborative Partnership. We believe lasting transformation happens through strong relationships. We walk alongside our ministry partners—encouraging, equipping, and holding one another accountable—to advance shared impact for the children we serve. We honor cultural differences by adapting our programs and approaches to reflect local context and by inviting our partners into decision-making, learning continuously, and course-correcting when needed.

    • Service with Humility. We seek to serve our partners with a spirit of grace and humility, modeling Christ’s servant leadership. Our role is to support and strengthen those on the front lines of ministry, helping them flourish in their calling.

    • Innovation with Purpose. We embrace creativity and adaptability, encouraging fresh approaches that respect local cultures and leverage technology wisely. We believe innovation, guided by prayer and discernment, helps ministries grow and remain effective in changing contexts.

    • Impact Through Holistic Transformation. We champion initiatives that nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—through education, leadership and skill development, access to health and wellness, and the gospel truth. Our goal is lasting transformation that empowers children to thrive and serve others for God’s glory.

    • Integrity. We hold ourselves and our partners to the highest ethical standards, measuring outcomes faithfully and ensuring that every decision advances our mission. Our commitment to truth and transparency builds trust and credibility in all we do.

    • Accountability. We take responsibility for our work culture and value the thoughts and ideas of individuals, seek resolution in conflict or disagreement, and agree not to create discord among team members. We adhere to established policy and practice for reporting any appearance of misuse of financial resources, abuse, neglect, or actions that jeopardize our mission and vision.

  • The new organization seeks to fulfill its mission through the ten (10) long-term holistic care ministries in the Dominican Republic.

Together, we will empower children from under-resourced communities in the Dominican Republic to experience transformed and abundant lives through:

    • Preschool through 12th grade holistic Christian education

    • Discipleship, including through sports and after-school ministries

    • Protective care

    • Trauma-responsive and restorative care

    • Family strengthening

    • Life, job, and leadership skills training with a certification upon completion

    • On-the-job training in collaboration with local businesses

    • Business training for entrepreneurs and leaders

  • The new organization will be governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors that operates in accordance with established bylaws, policies, and best practices. The Board provides fiduciary oversight, strategic direction, and accountability for the organization.

To ensure strong alignment and collaboration with the Dominican Republic ministry, three members of the new organization’s Board will also serve on the Board of Directors of Asociación Vida Para Niños, the local ministry organization in the Dominican Republic.

The new organization is also forming an Advisory Board of up to 25 members. The Advisory Board will provide guidance, expertise, and counsel to the Board of Directors and the Executive Director but it will not have governing authority.

The Board of Directors has hired an Executive Director to lead the day-to-day operations of new organization in alignment with the Board’s strategic direction and oversight. The Executive Director is responsible for organizational leadership, development, operations, financial oversight, communications, and ministry coordination.

In addition, a dedicated U.S.-based team will be built to support the ministry through development, donor care, marketing and communications, child sponsorship administration, missionary support, service team support, and operational excellence.

This governance and leadership structure is designed to ensure strong accountability, clarity of roles, and long-term sustainability, while honoring and supporting the leadership and ministry work taking place in the Dominican Republic.

  • The organization is committed to

    • Strong governance and financial oversight

    • Transparent reporting

    • Adherence to child protection and trauma-informed care best practices

    • Clear policies, audits, and accountability structures

The goal is to strengthen—not disrupt—the ministry’s integrity and effectiveness.

Next steps & contact information

  • The new leadership team has taken steps to register a non-profit organization in the United States that qualifies under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for tax-exempt purposes. It has filed for recognition of its tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service and its application is pending. The Asociación Vida Para Niños, the legally registered nongovernmental organization (NGO) in the Dominican Republic, will not change.

We will spend January gathering feedback on a name and brand identity for the new organization. This is important because the ministries were built by the nationals, missionaries, and people like you. We want everyone to feel connected and aligned with how we move forward.

The name that was used to register the organization was Seed to Sower Foundation (STS). In October, Franci, a former student and current staff member, was reflecting on the impact the DR ministry had on him. He said, “I went from being a ministry kid–a seed–you harvested to becoming a staff member–a sower. I am now impacting the lives of other children in the DR.”

We were immediately touched by 2 Corinthians 9: 9-12 (NIV):

As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

The inspiration of Franci’s story and this verse became the basis for the name Seed to Sower Foundation that was used in the registration. Having said that, we are gathering feedback on the name of the new organization. Please send any feedback to kidsalivedr@gmail.com or call us at 885-755-1309.

  • We plan to launch our website by February 15th

In the meantime, we will be posting updates about the transition at www.kidsalivedr.com/transition. You will be able to find more information about the new organization there.

You can also contact us at kidsalivedr@gmail.com or call 855-755-1309.

  • If you are interested in serving in some kind of an advisory or volunteer role, please reach out to us here: kidsalivedr@gmail.com or call 855-755-1309.

  • There will be unknowns and challenges as we establish this new organization. However, we are attempting to determine weak points and to plan accordingly. We are working through short-term mission software and believe we have a great solution; it just will take some time to implement.

Similarly, the Student and Safe Have Champion software isn’t an easy transition, with 2000+ children and child sponsors. We believe we have a solid plan and the right software. In fact, the functionality, once implemented, should be incredibly exciting! It’s just going to take some time to get implemented.

There is uncertainty with cash flow, as we are a new organization, and the timing of donations will be crucial in allowing us to avoid operational disruption of the ten (10) ministries in the Dominican Republic. Cash flow is a primary focus. We know that God controls all our resources. He has provided us.

2 Corinthians 9:10 “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.”

We also trust those who have been faithful in serving alongside us through financial giving will continue to do so. The responsibility is significant and the work will be considerable, but we have good cheer, motivation and encouragement from our close community who have walked with us for many years.

Ultimately, we are most excited that we will be able to craft, collaborate, and build this in a way that harnesses everyone’s time, talent, treasure, ties and testimonies to serve the kids in the Dominican, and be glorifying to God.
