Miguel entered the Ark Jarabacoa in a group of siblings coming from a home plagued with drug abuse and neglect. Their parents were heavily involved in drugs and faced significant mental health challenges. The children frequently experienced physical abuse and were drawn into the drug trade of their parents—often used to run drugs for their father, widely known on the streets as a prolific dealer.

When Miguel first arrived at the Ark, he was emotionally shut down. His demeanor was distant and serious; his caregivers described him as expressionless and dull, as if he had no reason to live. He resisted support and avoided connection with others, especially authority figures, often getting into fights with his siblings and acting aggressively towards others. However, after just a couple of months living with his house parents, noticeable changes began to take place. Miguel developed a strong and respectful relationship with his house father, which played a key role in his growth.

Academic Growth

Due to the neglect he experienced before arriving at the Ark, Miguel had not been attending school regularly. Now enrolled at ANIJA School, he thrives academically. Through tutoring at the Ark and support from the teachers at ANIJA, he performs at a high level, receiving excellent grades, along with consistent school attendance.

Spiritual Growth

Miguel was introduced to the transformative love of Christ and began to experience the impact of Christian community. In 2024, he made a personal decision to follow Christ and chose to be baptized. He continues to be discipled through the local church and is actively involved in the youth ministry.

Physical & Social Growth

Physically, he is healthier and stronger, participating in sports at school and in the community. His emotional growth is equally notable. When asked about what has changed in his life since coming to the Ark, Miguel answered that he is able to think more clearly and communicate more effectively. Initially aggressive—especially toward his siblings—Miguel has grown In his ability to navigate conflict peacably, even growing to be a protective and nurturing brother. He shows care, helping to create a safer, more loving dynamic among his house family.

The directors of the Ark were abounding in gratitude for Miguel’s transformation: “Everything had hit rock bottom just before Miguel arrived. And now it's all different. He has grown physically, emotionally, spiritually, and academically. He has hope for the future.”

Miguel’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when a child is not only given a safe home, but love, structure, and the opportunity to heal. By the grace of God, Miguel has grown to live a life of abundance through the consistent care of his house parents, the multidisciplinary team at the Ark, the support of a Christ-centered community, and ultimately a personal relationship with Jesus.
